Which Filter System Is Right for Me?

Water quality has been highly compromised, making filtration a serious necessity for all those concerned about their health and that of their loved ones, their animals, and the environment in general.

Water has been processed, chemicalized, and contaminated so much that the safety and effectiveness of tap and even bottled water are of major concern.

Not All Filters Are Created Equal

Many purchase filters (like Brita) from popular retail outlets, expecting that they adequately address their water needs.

While these filters may remove some chlorine and contaminants, they cannot address the many and complex needs of water, in order to promote good health and hydration. 

And these mass-marketed units are always more expensive in the long run because the replacement cartridges don’t last long, and the disposable nature of the filters is harmful to the environment, not to mention the manifold negative effects on your health and the inevitable costs.

There are better, more effective solutions that save you money.

Your Options

The type of filter: KDF or Reverse Osmosis

KDF (Kinetic Degradation Fluxion) is one of the best filter medias, used worldwide for diverse water filtration. It is a good balance between affordability and effectiveness. While it removes many contaminants that could only be removed by reverse osmosis before, it does not strip the water of its minerals as does reverse osmosis (there are good reasons to not remove the minerals).

Reverse Osmosis is one of the most reliable and complete filtration methods available, provided the system is maintained and equipped with proper pre-filters. It is an excellent system because it removes everything from the water. This is also its drawback. Besides chemicals and contaminants, it also removes the minerals that keep the water ionically stable and the pH balanced.

By removing all of the minerals, the pH becomes acidic making the water ionically aggressive; it seeks to regain its bonding partners and takes what minerals it can from your body. To minimize this effect, a trace mineral buffering cartridge and a calcite cartridge to rebalance the pH can be added to the RO system. (Click here to read more about water pH and alkalinity.) This gives you the benefits of complete removal of contaminants, without the adverse health effects of acidic demineralized water.

Coverage: Point of Use or Whole House

Point of Use Filtration Units attach to the kitchen tap, shower, bath, or anywhere you have a tap. They are convenient and reasonably priced.

The different types of Point of Use filters:

Whole House Filtration Systems give you convenience and safety because there is filtered water from every tap.

Whole House KDF Filtration removes chemicals and contaminants from the water in your entire house, making it safe to drink from any tap, and automatically filters the shower and bath water.  Options are available to bypass certain water lines such as to toilets, washing machine, and outside lines, saving on the life of the filter cartridges.

The absolute best option for water containing fluoride or nitrates is to install a Whole House KDF Filtration System with Point of Use Reverse Osmosis (with trace mineral buffer and calcite cartridges) on the kitchen sink. This way water will be safe to drink from any tap, and you will have the benefit of complete chemical and contamination removal (100% fluoride removal) for your main drinking and cooking water.

So, which filtration system is best for me?

The 2 or 3 Stage KDF Filter on the kitchen faucet with filters for the bath and shower is an affordable high quality filtration system that is easy to install.

For 100% removal of fluoride, drug residues, and other persistent contaminants from your drinking water (see table below), your best option is Reverse Osmosis, with calcite and trace mineral cartridges to balance pH and replace minerals.
