New Buildings - Straw, Sticks or Bricks? |
The Straw/Clay Workshop 2009 ReportWet and WellThe straw/clay workshop went very well although somewhat wet. How often do we have cool, wet weather in August in southern Alberta? It is usually bone dry and cookin’ hot. Not this year. However, the participants at the workshop appreciated the coolness, as the work was rather invigorating.
Monday was rainy and cool, but everyone was able to work on making window and door frames and other matrix components for the walls in the workshop, which was roomy, clean, and dry.
Tuesday was more of an adventure as the guys hauled wood chips to the worksite to help with all the mud. To compound the problem of an inch and a half of rain, the road to the worksite was fresh fill which had not been packed by traffic, so it became a big bog.
Still, the components for the walls of the house were put into place, ready for the straw/clay fill.
Wednesday was still wet, but everyone appreciated the coolness as they continued with the components and started to mix the straw and clay.
Thursday and Friday were dry weather-wise, but all involved had mud up to their ears, as the straw/clay mixture was packed into the walls with gusto.
By Friday afternoon the most complicated wall was completed and a good part of one other wall. The two remaining walls would be easier, as they had more open spaces for windows.
Some folks returned the following week to help with completing the infilling of the walls and to work on other aspects of the project. We were thankful for that. If you would like to be a part of a straw/clay construction workshop, we plan to have a couple next summer as well. Let us know if you are interested, and we will keep you posted on events and dates.
