Harvest Haven sticker prices are higher on some things, and for good reason. We are delivering a product of superior quality, which even certified organic farmers, much less conventional farmers, are not providing to the public. They may be ignorant of what it takes and/or reluctant to take the further steps that we take because their costs would increase, and they would cease to be competitive or profitable. The public is not demanding true excellence in what they put into their bodies. They do not know what they are eating and often do not care to know. In today's world, trying to earn a living by growing small scale, labor intensive, high quality food is economic madness. Let me say what is obvious: We are not here primarily to earn money. No, there are greater rewards and reasons for what we do. We would, however, like to be reasonably paid for our services and products. That is a good thing for you. Otherwise the marketplace will remain full of food products that lack good flavor, do not support health, and cause pollution. People have not been aware of the true value of good food and have not insisted on it. As producers and sellers, we need to help by speaking up. We need to let you know what you are getting when you come to Harvest Haven. Some, in great ignorance, have complained that our prices are too high. They do not realize they are not comparing apples to apples. Judging superficially, they are left in the dark. So what do we have for you here? Several pleased customers have told us we have the best strawberries - the sweetest tasting and most flavorful they have ever had the fortune of eating. We have even had staff of our competition secretly encourage their customers to buy Harvest Haven. We have been told by long time, seasoned organic consumers, and even some organic producers, that we have the best beef and chicken they have ever eaten. People love our Harvest Haven sausage, both beef and mutton. It was not easy getting there, as some of you may know; we have had our trials and failures. Those who have had a problem eating lamb try ours and are delighted with the flavor and with expanding their world of taste and experience. All "Alberta lamb" is not equal, not by a long shot. Don't take our word for it – try and compare. Since we have begun raising our own turkey, we have had numerous rave comments on both quality and taste (check out testimonies on our site for this and several other of our products). We have had rave reviews on our turkey stock, sauerkraut, and jams. How about Harvest Haven honey, produced right on our farm? It is unheated, unpasteurized, and without the almost universal use of antibiotics, so that you have a wonderful, delicious, healthful, enzyme-rich, sweet, pleasurable medicine that does you nothing but good - in moderation, of course, as with anything else.
We have been told by young and aged that we have excellent garlic – the best they have known - and they love our onions and leeks too. Depending on weather conditions, we have had excellent results and feedback with Harvest Haven potatoes, beets, carrots, squash, peas, beans, and corn. We continue to find ways to get the best, and it is not easy. Our Harvest Haven dandelion root powder invigorates the consumer and cleanses the liver harmlessly, effectively, and economically, like few things can. How important is your liver? While taste is important, the most important things are nutrition and health benefits. The question is: "How does Harvest Haven manage to produce such taste and quality, which indicates superior nutrition?" Let us assure you it is not by luck or chance! We implement what is necessary to achieve excellent results. Certified organic is not enough. For example, one of the most important things one can do to produce a nutritious, healthy product is to develop and restore the microbiological balance of the soil. Most certified organic farmers do not do this, much less conventional farmers. Certification doesn't require it. Another essential factor is the vitality of the water. Plants and animals are much healthier when their water is revitalized on an informational and energetic level. We have spent tens of thousands of dollars pursuing and establishing these two important factors to bring you a product superior in taste and nutrition to anything one can buy in Southern Alberta, the rest of Alberta, Canada, and elsewhere. So, while some of the products we make available are not higher in price than other apparently similar products on the market (some are less), some are higher, and we make no apology for it. We just want you to know why. Love and enjoy our food, and be confident you are getting great value. We will keep trying to do even better. We hope to establish the "Harvest Haven" brand as a trademark of excellence. Lord willing, we will achieve that excellence in all we produce. This summer we have beautiful greens that include Butter and Oakleaf lettuces, Bon Vivant salad green mixtures, succulent baby spinach, spicy arugula and mustard greens, exotic Japanese Komatsuna greens and Chinese Pai-Tsai greens, cilantro that explodes with flavour and sweetness; and that is just our greens. I will never forget what the Chi Machine taught me when I first began using it in 2000. I was 44, in good health and with no complaints, so why would I use a machine for my health? Answer: Because, there is always better! Of course, I knew that if I wanted to seriously train and spend a lot of time and money on massages and other health treatments, I could feel better. We have a large variety of breads from which to choose. There is the solid Honey Whole Wheat, which is a staple for breakfast at the farm. To go with a hearty bowl of hot soup, we have thick-sliced Roasted Onion or Kingsgrain Sourdough. For a nice light sandwich, you can choose Harvest Haven Bread, Multi-grain, or Mountain Rye. Focaccia is delicious with your favourite pasta dish or dipped in balsamic vinegar and olive oil. For those who are unable to eat wheat, we have a variety of breads made with spelt or Kamut flour. We even have spelt tortillas as well as whole wheat and white flour burritos for a taste of Mexico. All of the breads are made with organic ingredients, no preservatives, or dough enhancers. Just the basics! Add to that another of our simply good basics - Harvest Haven Sausage. Our sausage is made from pure organic Harvest Haven beef, sea salt and different spices according to the type of sausage. There are no meat by-products, no fillers, no MSG, no nitrites or nitrates. Just the basics! We have a wide selection of sausages from which to choose: garlic, smokies, breakfast, wieners, and lots more. "WE BOUGHT THE FARM"Where Is the Line Drawn?"And no one lighting a lamp covers it with a vessel or puts it under a couch; but he sets it on a lampstand so that those who enter in may see the light. For nothing is secret that shall not be revealed; nor secret which shall not be known and come to be revealed" (Luke 8:16-17 MKJV). Normally, we reserve this section for a touch of humor, speaking of things that happen to us. Occasionally, we depart from humor and inform you of other aspects of "buying the farm." Here is such an aspect, quite sobering, but some things are more important than laughter. We regard all issues of life as one. A short while ago, we received this note from a customer, Mr. Hartman: Hi Everyone: If you do not approve of Dr. Morgentaler receiving the Order of Canada award kindly call this number: 1-416-870-4444. It is to CTV and it is a "No" vote call. You do not have to say anything. It is answered with, "This is CTV and your 'No Vote' has been recorded." That's it. Archbishop Tom Collins from Toronto is asking that all people of good will protest "this act of dishonour" and ask that this action be revoked. In his archdiocese on Sunday will be a special day to pray for an end to abortion. Please pass on this phone # 1 416 870 4444. END OF MESSAGE Now, we are not Catholic, we are not involved in any formal religious organization, and we are of no partisan political persuasion. However, the morals and convictions we have from God are no respecters of religion or politics. Because of Him, we are not in agreement with bestowing the highest honor of Canada on an abortionist (the government doing this on our behalves, with our tax dollars). We feel obligated and are thankful to be given the opportunity to speak. We passed Mr. Hartman's message on to our local customers and friends with these words: "Hi everyone, This just in from one of our friends. We are calling the enclosed number to register our disapproval, and we pass the information along so that you may do as you choose." Please notice that we declared where we stood on this matter, and we offered others the opportunity to do as we did or leave it – "…you may do as you choose." That was it. We did not make a request, give a sales pitch, speak for anyone, or disallow anyone to take it or leave it. It was that simple. It was not that simple to others. They immediately reacted and, without further debate or reasoning, closed down all relations with us, business or otherwise. Do they not fail to see the irony and their contradiction? They adamantly insist on their rights and freedoms and, with equal adamance, deny us our freedom of speech and expression in the business world. However, living according to what is right in the sight of God and man is our business! It is on account of our God-given conviction of doing what is right that we farm organically and provide healthy products and services to the public. Harvest Haven is a very public testimony of the Law of God, the two pillars of which are loving Him and loving our neighbor, even all of His creation. Our organic business is but a small part of the picture, and it is truly minor compared to the greater issues of life. After all, Jesus said to Satan, who tempted Him, "Man shall not live by bread alone but by every word that proceeds forth from the mouth of God." Obviously the Order of Canada is not a private matter. If men have the right to publicly honor the butchering of unborn babies (see evidence), how much more do we have the right, and the responsibility, to publicly identify with the Light of all men, Who says, "You shall not kill"? To us, this is not a matter of politics, religion or business, but of life (and death). We are eternally thankful for the God-granted ability, will, faith, courage, and opportunity to "shout from the house (or barn) tops that which we have heard in the ear," a command to us from God Himself, Jesus Christ. (I should think that the shouts from housetops would be heard in business shops and offices as well, or was Jesus speaking of shouting only in residential areas, well-distanced from commerce and agriculture?) We bought the farm to live life and do and speak right. It is all one; it is all or nothing. The sooner people learn that, not only of us but of themselves, the sooner will they be free to stand for truth, justice, and freedom. All is one. It is said that when one goes shopping for food, there are two prices - the cost of the goods and the cost to one's health. Many are not aware that most of what they buy at the conventional grocery store is poison disguised as tasty and nutritious food.
