Harvest Haven started out as a U-pick organic strawberry operation
with a few fresh chickens for some friends and a lamb or two for
those who were interested. The store has now grown to include everything
that is needed to prepare a gourmet meal or a simple sandwich,
plus the essentials for cleaning up afterwards, such as non-toxic
dish soap and laundry detergents.
Besides the strawberries (which are now U-pick and we-pick, fresh and frozen),
the on-farm store carries other products that we raise, such as free-range
eggs, chickens, and turkeys, pasture-raised beef and lamb, and different kinds
of produce that grow in this climate. To
supplement these items, fresh produce is brought in, firstly from local organic
producers, then Canadian, and lastly,
from afield. All produce is picked and sold as ripe and as fresh as possible
to ensure that the customer is receiving a product that is the most nutritious,
not to mention delicious. The livestock on Harvest Haven is raised in a low
stress environment to ensure excellent flavour and a nutritious product. Care
is taken at every step, from production to sale, to provide food that the consumer
can be confident is the best.
With "back to basics" being important in the preparation of food, the store carries a full selection of baking goods, such as a number of different types of flour and sugar, a large variety of dried beans and lentils, and fresh and/or dried herbs and spices. Recipes and advice are freely available. For those who don't have a lot of time, there are quick-fix, yet nutritious, items and suggestions.
There is a steady growth in the variety of products available for people with special diets. The quality and flavour are improving to the degree that "specialty" foods are the first choice for many consumers, not just those who need to watch what they eat. If something is not in the store, every effort is made to find it or provide a suitable substitute.
We are always learning about new products and ways to prepare the basic ones for interesting and healthy meals. Locally produced and organic food is a dynamic and exciting area in which to be involved, and one that is foundational and essential to good health for all who participate.
